About the 2026 festival
Some of the world’s leading military historians and authors will be coming to Hereford in September 2026 to reflect on the 250th anniversary of the American War of Independence, the 90th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War and the 80th anniversary of the start of the Cold War with Soviet Russia and the Communist bloc.
We will also be diving deep into the 100 Years War between England and France in the Middle Ages, examining the role of military force in the creation of the British Empire, celebrating a personal link to the “forgotten war” in Burma in WW2, reviewing the current geopolitical landscape and much much more.
Held in the historic city of Hereford – home to a proud military tradition and the legendary SAS – this festival is a platform for three days of balanced debate, engaging talks and insightful discussions. Focusing on military literature, memoirs, historical analysis, and war writing, it offers a rare opportunity to hear from the leading voices in the field.
Whether you’re passionate about military history books, enjoy war memoirs or are interested in the literary legacy of conflict, the Hereford Military History Festival is an event which you can’t afford to miss.
The Festival is a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant and is committed to supporting the Herefordshire Veteran Support Centre.

In the 20th century, Hereford played a critical role in Britain’s military story. The munitions factory at Rotherwas supplied shells to the British army in both world wars and the RAF training base at Credenhill equipped pilots for service in Fighter and Bomber Command.
Today, Stirling Lines in Hereford is the headquarters of 22 SAS Regiment. An estimated 25% of Herefordshire's population has a connection to the armed forces.
